VIDEO: The Congo Dandies

Who are the Congo Dandies? This is the story of how the love for fashion and couture flares in the hearts of the poor.

"Living in Poverty and Spending a Fortune to Look Like a Million Dollars". This is the story of the Congo dandies.

La Sape is a movement in Congo all about style and elegance, the right combination of colours and textures, brand-names and the highest quality materials. Those engaged in the movement are called Sapeurs. These men are the fashion kings of Congo .

The Sapeurs know their brand names and wear only authentic pieces from brands such as Kenzo, Armani and YSL. Some take out loans and buy on credit to be seen in the hottest, latest clothing.

You have to wonder where this love of fashion comes from. "La Sape" was introduced by former Congolese servicemen stationed in France back in World War ll. Each Sunday, they would gather and show off all the clothes they bought with each other. When they returned from the war, these soldiers returned and brought Parisian fashion with them.

Some argue that these Sapeurs are victims of fashion, other argue that they are lovers of the art of fashion.
