Death of the Skinny Jean - denim we'll be wearing in 2017

Sorry guys. Skinny jeans are dead. There, I've said it. Whether that fact fills you with dread or relief, it's finally time to ditch those drainpipes and get on the straight and narrow, jeans that is. I know that loveable stretch has been very forgiving for us all but 2017's denim is really taking shape.

The skinny jean has definitely paid it's fashion dues. An essential in our wardrobes as a copy of 'This is it', skinnys have been a firm favourite for indie lovers and beyond. But you know a trend is on it's way out as soon as you see it one step too far...jeggings, I'm looking at you. Since then, signature denim has taken some serious steps into becoming the stand out piece we cannot live without, coming in all shapes, colours and sizes. From a statement patches to legs of rips or glitter, in bootcut, straight legged or mom cut, denim has officially reached it's highest height. It's no longer just a staple, it's an essential. So where do you start?

With an endless amount of jeans from high-end to high street, it's hard to know exactly what to invest in. Especially when finding the perfect fitting pair can be just as challenging as your yearly self-assessment. Make some space in your wardrobe for a new, looser fit. Whether it's boyfriend, bootcut, customised or crop, the choice is yours; just leave the restricting, tapered jean in 2016. Here here for liberated legs! Here's some of our personal favourites:

The Every day: Loose fit Regular jeans from H&M £39.99

These could just be the jeans that you live in every day of 2017. Casual, comfortable and the perfect wash, these bad boys are the definition of the perfect jean.

The Crop: Rolla's Eastcoast High Rise Crop Flare Jeans £76

Cropped jeans might sound a bit daunting – "Won't they make short legs look shorter?" we hear you cry – however, these are surprisingly flattering as the flare makes ankles appear narrower. Retro feels in an instant.

The not so skinny: Topshop Baxter £40

If you're not prepared to give up skinnies entirely then these midwash slim fit jeans are just what you need for the transition stage.

The freyed hem: Missguided £30

Wear with a simple tee, trainers and a statement winter coat for an easy answer to down-day dressing.

The Embroidered: Zara £29.99

Pop some colour on your daily denim with some stunning embroidery. A cute way to up the outfit ante.

The Step Hem: Monki Kimono Jeans £50

Now whether you DIY with an old pair or refresh with something new, the Vetements style step hem is going nowhere this season. Go big or go home with these amazing twisted hem numbers from Monki.

The flare-ish: Storets £63

Try these with a ruffled blouse (ideally a vibrant one from Marques' Almeida) and strappy heels for a fresh take on smart/casual.

RIP Skinny Jeans. Until next time.
