The fashion industry as a whole doesn’t do well in portraying individuals who's appearance deviate majorly from the norm of it's beauty standards. When Winnie Harlow came on the scene in America’s Next top model, cycle 21, It was new and exciting and endearing to have a model such a rare skin disease in the competition. There was no one like her in the industry at all. The condition Vitiligo, causes the skin to loose pigmentation in some areas.
Harlow's almost avant garde look was never a choice for the young model. In this video she discusses how the skin condition has been both positive and negative in her life and career but overall and most importantly, how it doesn't define her. She is the first model to attain the amount of success that she has with the skin condition, And for this reason she says that “People have an idea of who I am or what I should stand for, solely based on how I look, or what they’ve heard about me and that’s not necessarily who I am.”
