Keeping your skin safe this summer

Caring for your skin is something you should never ignore, especially in the summer months.

There are around three thousand cases of skin cancer every year, and 85% of these are preventable*. Tanning may be your top priority but is jeopardizing your skin really worth a couple of months of tan?

If you still need to know why you should be wearing sunscreen after that horrible fact then here are some tanning tips and advice for taking care of your skin in the sun.

Yup I said it. The sun is going to age you, that’s what happens when you burn. You’re damaging your skin and even though the burn may turn into a lovely golden colour the damage is still done. I never use anything on my face lower than factor 50, this may seem extreme but I do not want a face full of premature wrinkles and since I would like to grow old as gracefully as possible, I need to take care of my skin.

This includes when I’m wearing make up, as whilst a full face will provide some protection, nothing beats using actual sunscreen. I would also recommend getting a primer with an environmental shield especially if you live in a city, as it will help combat pollution as well as protecting you from the sun.

Use an illuminating lotion over your sunscreen for a sun kissed glow if you don't want to wear make up on holiday, the Charlotte Tilbury Unisex healthy glow is a firm favourite of mine.

It’s easy to forget that everywhere needs protection from the sun, even your hair. I find coverage is the best protection, a hat or a headscarf is a great holiday investment. If your not wearing a headscarf or a hat then make sure you pick up powdered sunshine from Lush, your hair will smell amazing and even though it’s only factor 15 some protection is better than none.

Now for people with coloured hair there is the whole other issue of sun bleaching to consider! There is no easy way to avoid it the sun, coupled with the sea and chlorine in the pool is going to strip the colour from your hair. My only advice is take a pre mixed dye with you on holiday and put it on half way through. I mix Manic Panic with a deep nourishing conditioner and pop it into a travel bottle, then I just use it as a one off conditioning treatment & hair dye top up.

Whilst the wrinkes MIGHT not be as noticeable as they are on your face, you will have to deal with other issues. Sun spots, and discolouration is definitely something you want to avoid.

Factor 50 is no longer a white paint disaster so you don’t have to worry about looking like someone has tried to paint you like a ghost. Superdrug do an amazing range of skin care that is cruelty free, this includes one of the best factor 50 sprays I have ever used. The bottle has a pump spray not one of those nasty aerosol ones which actually don’t provide as much cover as their lotion counterparts.

This Works has a leg oil thats spf 30 & has some bronzer in it, I found it worked best if I applied it over the top of my factor 50, it gave my a really healthy glow AND it can be used all over.

Can't live without that golden glow? Then fake it till you make it baby! I've recently had my first spray tan and I loved the results. So if you just can't live without that bronzed look then just fake it baby! But remember to invest in some good fake tan, no one wants to look like an oompa loompa.
