Day In The Life Of: Pot Yer Tits Away Luv

    | The brains and artist behind the Leeds based brand, Emma Low gave us some time to tell us about her Tit Pots. The pots to celebrate uniqueness and boobs.

We've all seen the quotes of the day telling us to "create your own destiny" but for Emma Low - the brains (and boobs) behind "Pot Yer Tits Away Luv" - that's exactly what she did. Traditionally, ceramics has been held to the realm of "women's arts." But Emma's pottery is anything but dainty. Celebrating the female form in all it's glorious shapes, sizes and colours, P.Y.T.A.L fast become an instagram sensation, and for a good reason! From finding her creative match in pottery, leaving her retail days behind her to figuring out a business routine that works for her, this is her day in the life of.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do?

I’m Emma, I’m originally from Edinburgh. Since then I’ve managed to call Glasgow, Manchester and Leeds home. I run a company called Pot Yer Tits Away Luv. It’s a pottery business that focuses mainly on the celebration of realistic feminine form. I live with my boyfriend, Archer and our cat, Lady.

How did you get into this business?

By complete accident, I always felt like a creative person but had never really found my niche. I’ve never been a huge fan of Christmas so I usually try to make my presents. In 2016 I decided to make pots for my friends and I really enjoyed working with clay. I decided to make a pot that was representative of my boobs for my boyfriend as an extra present. People liked it so much they wanted to buy their own. Archer has always really encouraged me to do more with my art so he was a big part in the beginning. I then set up an instagram account purely for the pots and it’s snowballed from there. I think the fact that I offer personalised items really helped the business to grow so quickly.

    A couple from today 💗

What's been your general career path?

After leaving school I went straight into working in retail full-time. I did attend a couple of college art based courses which really weren’t for me. I’m not someone who enjoys being told what to do when it comes to creativity, and I found the courses very demotivating. Needless to say I always ended up failing or dropping out. I’m definitely one of those people who thinks that university isn’t the be all end all of education. I wasn’t ready to go to uni and I think that going from school straight into a full-time job was actually very beneficial for me. It taught me how the real world works and how important hard work is. Maybe one day when I make up my mind what to study I will attend university but it’s definitely not at the top of my to do list. I worked my way up through a company from a part-timer to an assistant manager, moving with my job to Manchester when I got promoted. Since then I’ve managed a vintage store and when I started Pot Yer Tits Away Luv I was actually assistant manager at Dr Martens in Leeds.

If you weren't doing this, what would you be doing?

I’d definitely still be in retail, I genuinely thought I’d never get out!

Do you have a life motto / mantra?

Trust your gut. This is something that regardless of the situation I believe is relevant. If you feel iffy about something then there’s usually a reason behind it and on the flip side if you’re initial feeling is positive then have faith in that feeling!

Take us through a typical day. What time do you get up at?

One of the best and worst things about being self employed is getting to call your own shots. I’m not really a morning person so I usually get up quite late (around 10.30am) which always makes me feel guilty. My boyfriend gets up early for work, feeds Lady and then she always comes to see me for a snuggle. I’ll then get up and have a cup of tea and something to eat. Running the business by myself means my days can be very varied. One day I’ll be making pots, the next I’m taking photos, updating my website, replying to emails and the following day I’ll be painting, packaging and posting pots. I’ve only been doing Pot Yer Tits Away Luv full-time for about 4 months so I’m still trying to work out my routine. Most people that I know are strict when it comes to structuring their day, but I’ve got a much more laid back approach. If I’m having a good day I can be so productive but if it’s not looking so rosey I won’t force myself.

How do you keep yourself organised?

I work so much better on paper. Lists are a BIG thing for me. Usually when I get an order through I’ll write it down in my order book because the process of pottery has so many stages so I find it’s easier to keep on track. I’ll write everything from business stuff to personal goals down just so I can keep myself in the zone. I keep my receipts for EVERYTHING and I have a filling system for them, it makes doing my taxes much easier.

    Do you have an idol?

Anyone who manages to keep their houseplants alive! That shit is HARD!

How do you keep yourself going through a humpday?

I’ll usually just give myself some time off and do something else. The majority of the time I’ll put on cheesy pop music and clean the house, I actually find housework very therapeutic. It means that I can achieve something quite easily and feel like my day hasn’t been completely wasted. Since working from home I’ve become much more house-proud. I very rarely spend money on clothes anymore, homeware is my vice!

Biggest misconception about the job you do?

Probably that I’m always having a good time. I’ve learnt very quickly that when people ask how things are going that they want the sugar coated version. Creating a business and working alone can be very lonely. It’s super easy to be bummed out and without having someone around to raise your spirits it can be hard to stay motivated especially if like me you are used to working in a team environment. Having said that working for myself is a total dream most of the time and actually I’m very fortunate.

    How do you wind down?

Most nights I’ll hang out with my boyfriend. When Archer gets home from work we usually make dinner and watch something together. We’ve recently been binging the new Black Mirror, we find it hard to agree on things to watch - I’m a proper wuss when it comes to TV. I hate scary stuff and he can’t stand all the reality TV I watch. In my spare time I like to visit art galleries, we’re very lucky in the North of England when it comes to art. It’s full with wonderful free galleries which always have something interesting on. It helps me to stay inspired but also gets me out the house. Occasionally I’ll get to go home to Scotland and see my friends and family, which is always lovely. They are all so supportive of what I do, even my gran who has featured on my Instagram a couple of times.

What's your favourite thing about what you do?

Making something with my hands. I don’t think there is any greater feeling than creating something out of almost nothing. I’ve also got to know so many amazing people since starting the business, it’s incredible how supportive people have been! I’ve met more fabulous folk in the past 6 months than I have in the whole of my life.

Any advice for someone who would like to follow in your footsteps?

I wish I did! If anything I’d say believe in yourself. Never let fear put you off, the world can be a scary place so you have to be head strong (something I’m still learning to be) to put yourself out there. Social media can always be an amazing way to create something quite quickly, but don’t expect it to happen overnight. We live in an environment where instant gratification is everywhere so I think if it doesn’t immediately happen people get put off, try and push past that! Set some goals and smash them, then give yourself some more, focus on you and the rest will follow. Also stop putting it off, if you’ve got an idea - do it now before someone else does!
