Profile: Salon BLOW, Fallon Carberry

Today Fashion Fix Daily is profiling a day in the life of cult salon owner, Fallon Carberry of BLOW. Written by Sheri Scott with audio available through Amazon Echo.

Here at FFD, we love getting to know empowering entrepreneurs who are changing the face of their industry. This week, we are talking hair, more specifically, BLOW, the award winning colour and style bar taking Scotland - and the internet - by storm and the brains behind the business, Fallon Carberry.

From launching Guy Tang's metallic hair colours in the UK to creating the glitter roots movement (no seriously, check the Miley Cyrus regram) BLOW are always ahead of the game when it comes to their techniques, styles and colour combos. But how do they do it? Salon owner, Fallon, gives us a glimpse into a day in the life of Scotland's most creative salon.

Fallon tells us a little bit about a day in the life of Scotland's most creative salon.

Tell us a little bit about what you do Fallon?

I’m the owner and creative director of #BLOW style and colour bar.

How did you get into this business?

I have been hairdressing for 8 years now. As a creative I love to explore learning new skills and my passion for the hair industry grows with all the new exciting trends and techniques that emerge.

Take us through a typical day

Typical day can be anything from planning collaborations with up and coming brands, trend forecasting to giving clients there dream hair style. There’s always an exciting buzz in our salon and on our social media.

What time do you get up at?

I’m usually up super early on week days to get in some gym time to kick start the day off before heading into the salon.

What is the first thing you do when you wake up?

I always check the #BLOW social media accounts, check through emails and see what is trending for inspiration and then head into the salon to get creative with my team.

What do you have for breakfast?

Eggs for protein and a pot of tea whilst reading through my emails and schedule for the day.

How do you keep yourself organised?

I rely on my iPhone for everything. I have apps let me know what’s going on in the salon, my calendar and reminders to keep me on the ball. My receptionists also keep me alerted with any meetings we have scheduled in each salon.

Tell us how you structure your day...

I do tend to stick to a routine each day even on my days off as this helps me to manage my workload in the salon. As #BLOW is a very creative and fashion forward salon I am always switched on to the things around me, looking for inspiration wherever I go from fun drinks recipes to put behind our complimentary bar, or props for our social media channels. The day doesn't start and stop with hair, I have to think of the bigger picture of the salon and make sure we are constantly ahead of curve.

Generally, if I am not booked in with clients I'll be training staff in our training academy and attending meetings to see how I can further the business. No day is the same in our salons and work only finishes when my head hits the pillow.

What time do you finish work?

Running your own company means you are always planning, being creative and researching long after you have left the shop. There is no start and stop time for me, but that’s all part of being #thecoolestalternativesalonintheuk

How do you wind down?

Winding down for me involves hitting the gym, eating out with friends and reading a good motivational book. I usually have about 4 books that I switch between on my IBOOKS at any one time.

What's your bed time?

I’m usually sleeping by 10.30 as I love waking up super early (around 6am) as it's when I’m most productive.

Any advice for someone who would like to follow in your footsteps?

Prepare yourself to living and breathing your salon. Your success and motivation depend on your commitment and dedication. For me there is no such thing as a day off but the perks of having your own business outweigh the negatives.

So a typical day in the life of a hair salon owner isn't so typical after all! Make sure to check out Blow Colourbar on Instagram for all the behind the scenes from Scotlands leading hair salon.
