Profile: biscuit lady, Nikki McWilliams

Another new week folks, and if you have popped by for our weekly dose of Monday Motivation you've came to the right place! This week we are talking to the biscuit lady herself, Nikki McWilliams the designer and maker who has taken her love for bright colours, a good brew and well, biscuits and made it into a business. We've been huge fans of Nikki since we bought our first Caramel log cushion 4 years back, so we're excited what a day in her life looks like.

So Nikki, tell us a little bit about what you do?

Hello! I'm Nikki, AKA The Biscuit Lady. I run a wee design business from my studio in central Scotland- making all sorts of things inspired by my favourite edible treats, pop culture and lots of colour!

How did you get into this business?

I'd been running little business ventures since I was wee (one of my first was a stand in my front garden selling individual Monster Munch crisps for 5p each to neighboring children) so I think the idea of working for myself had always been ingrained.

When I finished Art School in 2008, I just started making things that I wanted for myself, and sharing them online. I think at that point- I saw the internet as my new Monster Munch stand and gave it everything I had.

Take us through a typical day

Oh my goodness- every day is different- and I really love it that way. I worked a day job in retail for 4 years while I was starting my business- and the monotony almost drove me mad.

What time do you get up at?

I get up at 7.30am. I'm a bit of a night owl when it comes to work- so I don't feel bad about not being the earliest of starters!

What is the first thing you do when you wake up?

I give Frankie his breakfast and a big cuddle. Mr Biscuit and I have coffee and I do some Instagram scrolling and posting.

What do you have for breakfast?

I am such a creature of habit- I usually eat the same food every day, for MONTHS. I did a round of Avocado toast, then porridge and banana. Now I'm hooked on smoothies. I like to know what I'm eating in the morning- it's one less thing to worry about in the day!

How do you keep yourself organised?

I live by my Bullet Journal! I made a Youtube video about how I use it below if you'd like a peep!

Tell us how you structure your day...

I do an email blast in the mornings. We do a couple of post days a week- which gets taken care of later in the day. I usually stop for lunch whenever Mr Biscuit gets home from his day job, so we can eat together and catch up. We both work after we've had our dinner too- Michael does a few hours of painting in his studio- and this is my creative time too. I think I feel more relaxed about making things once all of the business things are tied up for the day!

What time do you finish work?

Probably too late- about 8-9pm.

How do you wind down?

I have NEVER been an exercise person but in the last year I've started to enjoy doing more activities! It's impossible to check your phone while you're in a Spin Class...!

What's your bed time?

Frankie howls at the office door if I'm not in bed by 10.30pm.

Any advice for someone who would like to follow in your footsteps?

Work hard and don't worry about being super-niche. Do your thing well and your tribe will find you.
